In Colossians 3:23-24 Paul writes:

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

We need to be faithful stewards of all God has given us, that is, our time, treasure and talent, within the opportunities presented through his providence to glorify him, serve the common good, and further his Kingdom.

The disciples of Jesus were wondering what would be their gain after they had given up everything for him and the gospel. Peter was the one who led the team of disciples to ask Christ the fundamental question that puzzles even some of us today.

Mark 10:28-30 Peter said to Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.” “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the gospel will fail to receive a hundredfold in the present age—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, along with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.”

The disciples of Jesus were worried because they had given up everything they had. Everything, I mean everything, such as properties, possessions, time, comfort, money, resources, holidays, and personal enjoyment, and they wondered if all these things would be in vain. Is there no hope for us, and are we just wasting our time?

The answer Jesus gave them was fantastic. Jesus told them there is no one who has given up anything for him or the gospel that won’t be rewarded, and it is not just any kind of reward; he said one hundred times reward in this world and eternal life.
